Black Rock Forest: Northern Loop Hike

Total Distance: approximately 4+ miles
Difficulty: medium
Estimated hiking time: 3 hours

Hiking Notes

Take the trail from the parking area uphill for a short while until an intersection. Take the right fork onto the Sackett Trail (yellow blazes). Another yellow blazed trail, the Stillman Trail will merge with the Sackett trail in a short while. Take the Stillman trail going either straight (or to the left here). (Leave the road on the right when 2 yellow blazed trails split at a triple yellow blaze.)

A blue blazed trail, the Compartment Trail, will merge with Stillman trail. Take the combined yellow and blue trail. When, at an intersection the blue trail goes off to the right, go left to stay on the yellow (Stillman) trail. (an alternative is to visit the Split Rock trail to see Split rock).

Take the Stillman trail (yellow) all the way to Black Rock. Enjoy the view and eat lunch here. Retrace your steps on the Stillman trail. When you get to Continental Road (may not be marked) make a right and then a left onto another yellow trail (Sackett). Take the Sackett trail back to the intersection where another yellow trail to the right will bring you back to your car.

What to Bring

Other Useful Information

We are meeting, promptly, at 8:00am in front of TBA. Drivers should double park their cars in front of the building (please gas up BEFORE coming). All passengers are expected to contribute their fair share towards gas, parking fees, and tolls! We will return to the city in mid to late afternoon. Rain cancels the trip.

Driving Directions from NYC

From NYC take the George Washington Bridge to the Palisades Interstate Parkway (going north). Take the Palisades Inerstate Parkway for about 40 miles until its end where you pick up Route 9W North at a traffic circle just before the Bear Mountain Bridge.

Take Route 9W North for about 9 miles until Angola Road. Angola Road is a right hand exit, make a left hand turn just after the exit onto Angola Road. Drive southwest on Angola Road for about 1.5 miles. Make a left turn onto Mine Hill Road and drive about 0.9 miles (always heading in the direction of the "Dead End") until the turnout/parking area on the right. The trail begins opposite the uphill end of the turnout and is marked my three yellow diamonds.

The total driving time is estimated at one hour without traffic. Note that there is very limited parking in the parking area (6-8 cars max).
